Who are the girls who make rugged tees popular and bushy hair trendy that the world has developed a collective girl crush, you ask?
Although the glossy covers of fashion magazines sport the ever-changing hairstyles of Kylie Jenner or the raunchy scandals of Miley Cyrus, the tables have turned due to these jeans-obsessed, ‘70s-inspired siblings - known by their last name, HAIM - from San Fernando Valley who are breaking into the scene, magically waking up with perfectly imperfect waves at the crack of dawn in a $6 Nirvana t-shirt matched with $350 Chloé sunglasses.
The bass-playing (and oldest) sister, Este, gleams in her usual retro set-up, featuring flowered dresses, leather skirts, jean jackets, lace frocks, crop tops, and bomber jackets. Next, Danielle - the middle sister to the wolf pack - casually flaunts her fashion mantras through leather jackets, laid-back suits, white blouses, farmer hats, and denim shirts to emphasize her tomboy-influenced style. And, Alana - the youngest sister capable of playing three instruments simultaneously - practically lives within her graphic tees, fringed shorts, and varsity jackets to don a sporty-chic vibe.
The aforementioned sisters - all of which have their hair parted directly at the center - fervently discuss their childhood addiction with Prince and their (latest) fashion finds at vintage shops. Known for performing as the opening act to Taylor Swift’s 1989 tour and as one of the lined-up bands for the 2014 Coachella, HAIM (composed of Este, Danielle, and Alana) has accumulated a staunch cult of followers, all of which practically kiss their leather-boot-clad feet. The sisters - although attached to each other’s hips as long as they can possibly remember - still manage to earn their own pedestals in the name of celebrity fashion, igniting the reminiscing flame of the ‘70s indie look.
Together, the HAIM sisters always look undeniably effortless in the popular crowd of celebrities trying to fight for the spotlight. With their brown locks au naturel, their make-up toned down, and their I-just-rolled-out-of-bed attitude, the blood-related trio escapades into the fashion world of simplicity. Although the sisters don’t mind showing off their love for haute couture with a pair of sunnies worth an incredulous amount, they usually opt for an inexpensive t-shirt from their local consignment shop to pair with leather booties and jean jackets. But, despite their infatuation with “less is more,” the HAIM sisters were recently hailed the queens (yes, that is in fact plural) of the Grammys with my personally dubbed name of the “Oreo Cookie” with Este and Alana - posing at the ends of their sister - wearing laced and cut-out ensembles of black frocks, while Danielle - hair mussed - flaunted a gorgeous suit in off-white with no visible jewelry whatsoever.
Never thought an Oreo Cookie would look so good. Thanks, HAIM.
Honestly, who ever knew these three sisters could make ankle boots, white tees, and leather jackets the essential staples of fashion, welcoming the wild child inside each of us? Although we might be feeling Este’s cherry-red lipstick one day, Danielle’s leather jacket on the other, and Alana’s jean shorts on Fridays, we always find ourselves compelled to mismatch each style to embody each sister faithfully. (Because you really can’t just pick one, am I right?) Even though we might not be able to splurge on those pointed Acne Studios boots or the embroidered Valentino dress HAIM relentlessly wears, we always delve into the holistic decision of buying ripped jeans and white tees as if they were rites to religion for the masses.
Thus, whoever said fashion was truly a religion is entirely right because HAIM is nothing but the Holy Trinity of haute couture and vintage vogue. And we pray to God it stays this way forever.
