Jason Derulo just released a new single that deserves to get some attention. Recently-released “If It Ain't Love” is as of now a part of his fifth era, whose corresponding album is currently untitled. Considering that Jason released an album just last year, Everything Is 4, which followed the 2014 release Talk Dirty, which followed the 2013 release Tattoos and that people aren't sure whether “If It Ain't Love” is a re-release single or a new-era single like the underwhelming song of his “Naked” supposedly was, it's safe to say that Jason could use a break. Failing to capitalize on amazing songs with significant features such as Jennifer Lopez and Meghan Trainor and releasing random singles and album singles simultaneously (“Get Ugly” and “Naked”, which is a ridiculous thing to do - trying to start a new era when the current one isn't over yet), Jason lost his momentum from “Want to Want Me”, which, like its album Everything Is 4 is underwhelming, but quite polished and radio-friendly. Jason's darker songs, which I tend to prefer, don't seem to resonate with the public, and “If It Ain't Love” seems to fall into this category along with “Cheyenne”, “Breathing”, and “What If” to an extent. “If It Ain't Love” demonstrates Jason's falsetto prowess, which he has become quite known for and allows him to make the most of his voice. The urban contemporary song with pop elements is somewhat unpolished, but its artistry is commendable. It's like a more contemporary “Breathing” with all its emotion and with hints of “Don't Wanna Go Home”. The chorus doesn't hit as hard as I would like it to, but it has artistry. The smooth verses are actually my preference, along with the build-up pre-chorus. Instead of a euphoric, explosive chorus, Jason goes the more composed and swagger-filled route. The dark and contemporary but still mainstream production of the song is excellent. The bridge is odd, and negatively affects the cohesiveness of the song, more so than the chorus, which arguably works. Overall, the song has much potential, but certainly has room for improvement. Perhaps with a break, Jason can embark in a different musical direction and/or release another perfect song and album, perhaps some growth and inspiration would get him there. Time should not be placed on art, so Jason should take as long as he needs and break his current “breakless” schedule; that will definitely have a positive effect on the music. That being said, “If It Ain't Love” will definitely impress those who think that all Jason can do is generic pop, and the song is better than the majority of his previous album, which significantly pales in comparison to his other work, despite “Cheyenne” still being one of my favorite tracks of his to this day.
