Natasha Bedingfield recently sang lead vocals on DJ Basto's newest single "Unicorn". You may know Basto from his production on Azealia Banks's hit single in Europe "212". Fans cannot wait for an actual album, the follow-up to her previous album from 2010 Strip Me, from the talented singer-songwriter Natasha, but singles like this and 2015's "Hope" help ease the endless wait. Natasha has always made happy, uplifting, inspirational music like "Unwritten", " Pocketful of Sunshine", and "These Words", and with "Unicorn", she continues this trend that we all know her and love her for. "Unicorn" is a pop-dubstep song, and usually those sorts of songs are not known for their lyrics, but Natasha would not lessen the quality of her songwriting or artistry for any sound. The song could be labelled as generic, but with its catchiness, heartwarming lyrics, and impeccable vocals, it would leave a smile on anyone's face. The structure of the song is quite interesting, with the second verse sounding like an after-chorus due to a seamless transition from chorus to verse that is not as evident as usual in pop music. The instrumental is very whimsical and matches the relatable and "cute" inspirational message relayed: the comparison of a person to a unicorn. Although that comparison is not the most creative and deep concept, the rest of the lyrics compensate. Lyrics include the following: "You're stronger than you know, red diamonds in the snow / They not gonna outshine you, they got nothing on your glow" and "Don't be lonely, cause there's no one the same / You're not the only one who's feeling this way / Who cares about the norm? / You've been perfect from the day that you were born", encouraging confidence, self-esteem, and difference. Conveying lyrics such as these in a pop-dubstep song rather than a more conventional ballad is a refreshing touch and adds to the "specialness" of the song. Natasha is a powerhouse vocalist, able to sustain B5 belts for at least a second, and not many in the industry can do that as well with such power (Kelly Clarkson, Celine Dion, Patti Labelle, to name a few). With a voice like hers, she deserves to be dominating the pop game like she did in the mid-2000's, and a hybrid of fun/uplifting music and more subdued, melancholy music like the excellent "Soulmate" should do the trick. Very excited to hear new music from her...her album should be coming out quite soon.
