Ariana Grande recently released a new lead single "Dangerous Woman" after scrapping original lead single and now buzz single (relegated to Japan-only album track) "Focus" after its underperformance as well as fans' distaste in the fact that the song sounds like a re-hash of Problem and thus more like a re-release single (such as Katy Perry's "Part of Me" off of Teenage Dream/Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection) than a new era release. In this song, Ariana definitely ditches the generic pop sound and goes for a more contemporary, polished sound. The song has a continuous arpeggio similar to one of the highlights on Rihanna's Anti, "Love on the Brain". Despite the song being technically good, I feel like something is missing and overall the song lacks memorability and a hard-hitting element. For instance, "Focus" may technically pale in comparison, but it's ultimately an infectious song, for better or worse. I'll admit that since I don't personally love Ariana's tone (she's obviously a skilled vocalist, nevertheless), it would take a certain something to impress me. For instance, "The Way" and "Love Me Harder" are perfect examples of songs from her that are memorable, hard-hitting, and artistically excellent. With the mixing of some elements of "Focus" and some elements of "Dangerous Woman", something stellar could come to life. The arpeggio and guitar in the bridge gives the song a throwback vibe. Ariana's enunciation is also better than ever, and that makes me enjoy the song more. The song's structure is a powerful pre-chorus sandwiched by a subtle verse and chorus. The choruses at the end of the song are sung with full force, Ariana hitting the high notes with agility like the light-lyric soprano she is. Overall, I respect the song and the artistic effort, but in my opinion, it simply isn't memorable: I've heard it multiple times before today and I still had to listen to the song several times while reviewing it to remind myself of all the components. What I mostly remember is that it shares some similarities with "Love on the Brain" in terms of its instrumental and its overall feel. Fans will see how title track "Dangerous Woman" compares to the rest of the album, which will contain four features: only Macy Gray and Lil Wayne are known as of now (Nicki Minaj has been rumored). Could one of the features be her fellow four-octave friend Demi Lovato? We'll just have to wait and see.
