Daya is an up-and-coming artist to look out for. A talented singer-songwriter beyond her years as an artist such as Lorde and Birdy, the seventeen-year-old delivered with her debut self-titled EP. Like with Lorde’s debut release, The Love Club EP, Daya’s EP hints at some room to grow, but also makes evident Daya’s artistry and talent. Surely her debut album will be the Pure Heroine to her The Love Club EP. We all know Daya from her breakout hit “Hide Away”, a powerful, relatable, art pop song in the vein of “Royals”. Her voice sounds youthful, yet beyond its years. The chorus is especially infectious, the instrumental is whimsical and uplifting, and Daya showcases her beautiful high belts and falsetto at the end of the choruses. As great as “Hide Away” is, it holds no candle to the closer “Back to Me”. The completely stripped-down ballad is simply Daya and her piano. She pours out her soul in the lyrics in a captivating way. The subtle verses are juxtaposed by the powerful chorus: “Can't keep pulling you back to me me me me me”. For a ballad, the song has dynamics and memorability and rhythm, thus making it a perfect single choice, as radio-friendly as a pop song but that also conveys Daya's talent excellently. The most mature song on the EP, hopefully Daya goes down this deep, moving route with her upcoming album. The remaining four songs on the EP are power-pop in the vein of “Hide Away”, albelt paling in comparison (“U12”, read as “You Want To” a bit more downtempo). As Daya finds herself more as an artist and taps into her potential even more, she will should deliver a more versatile project. She's only 17, she still has so much to experience and incorporate into her music, and she has the talent to do it. The production on the EP is very good, either being art pop, power pop, or electro pop on the five pop songs. “Legendary” and “Thirsty” are my next favorite songs on the EP, as they are both hard-hitting and filled with personality; “Thirsty” even features Daya rapping and spelling out the word thirsty in a Fergie-esque fashion. Second single “Sit Still, Look Pretty” is awkwardly structured, and therefore not a favorite to listen to. My choice for second single would have been “Back to Me” or if a pop song was necessary, then “Legendary”. “U12” just doesn't go anywhere, but its downtempo pop sound is refreshing on the EP. You can hear more from Daya on her second hit “Don't Let Me Down” with The Chainsmokers and her assumed upcoming follow-up album. After hearing “Hide Away” and especially “Back to Me”, I'm so excited to hear more music from Daya. She's on track to be the next it girl in pop music, which is rightfully deserved at only seventeen years old.
